骄 The Sturdy Horse

【骄】

The original meaning of the Chinese character 骄 (jiāo) is a tall and sturdy steed, and it is extended to describe a horse’s tall and robust appearance.

It also refers to a horse galloping uncontrollably, as seen in Wen Tingyun’s Clear and Bright Day: "The steed, unruly, swerves to avoid the carriage curtain; the rooster, startled, bursts out of the cage at once." It is further extended to mean arrogant and indulgent, as in the word 骄纵 (jiāozòng) (arrogant and unruly).
