The original meaning of the Chinese character 驯 (xùn) is a horse being tame and obedient, as seen in Huainanzi·Treatise on Forests and Teachings: "A horse is first tamed before being sought for its excellence; a person is first trusted before being sought for their ability." 

It is extended to mean taming birds and beasts.
